Charlies is one of those mistakes you make when you are drunk, think it's the most amazing food ever, then instantly regret once sober.

That's exactly how I spent my Dublin vacation and how I stumbled upon Charlies. Having spent one of my first nights with friends from Ireland and having to drink like the Irish, we stumbled back to our hotel grumbling about being hungry and a suggestion for Charlies came up. To my knowledge when asking Dubliners what's a good Dubliner meal, most have told me asian dishes. So, in my intoxicated state, I agreed.

The food here is so greasy and has no taste, yet you wouldn't admit that in the right...or wrong state of mind.

It's cheap, it's a late night filler, and if you're American like me, it's the best place to see the Irish act like our stereotypical depiction. I love it!

There could be two reviews of Charlies - when you have a feed of pints on you FIVE STARS, when you don't ONE STAR!

This is the important thing - when you think you had something amazing there the other night never, EVER, go back and see if it was a nice as you remember when you are sober. I have tried this - it does not work!

This is kind of ramen stands in Tokyo, White Castle in midwest/US, etc.  After you had a couple (or lots) of drinks, and now it's after midnight - and you are hungry and looking for something to eat with some grease.  :p

The food is nothing special, but when you're drunk and hungry, Charlies is conveniently there for you...   (Yes, I've been there and done it...)

Oh dear. How many times have I ended up here attempting to order for about 5 people without slurring my words and keep perfect balance at the same time. It's a hard skill trust me.

In all fairness I can honestly say I have never stepped foot in here sober. Which puts it into my drunken food category and does not step over the boundary that divides drunk food and sober food. Only three or for places have ever crossed it.

Now when you're drunk the food is spot on! And even better.....they have toilets!  The food is greasy and fatty therefore making it perfect as it makes it a lot easier to eat when you're ever so slightly intoxicated. The food is very easy to eat on the move as I've done the whole "OK guys....we get the food and then we peg it and get a taxi so we can watch a DVD and devour this.....then maybe have a few more drinks."

Although I do deny eating it in the morning when I catch sight of the plastic trays and the seedy smell of old Chinese lingering in the air. I'm sure drunk me would beg to differ.

Oh charlies, always there when I need you. Usually at 3/4 in the morning. Beat your way through the crowds of Dame street on a weekend night, which is a an achievement in itself, to get in here. This original Charlies is right beside the Olympia in the heart of Dublin.

Only in Ireland could food this blatantly greasy and calorific be so celebrated. Not that i'm complaining. Charlies is the only place to go after a night out in Dublin and when curry flavoured goodness is required.

The 3 in 1(chips, curry sauce and rice) or chicken balls, chips & sauce  are just great. Greasy and stodgealicious, coming in at €8 its not that cheap but sometimes it just has to be done.

Try not fall asleep waiting for your food, the staff are well able to roar out your order if you do anyway.

Charlie's is a tough ton e to describe - it's like the McDonald's of the Chinese world - basically just fast Chinese food.

I have to say I quite like it - it's not exactly authentic, far from it, but it always tastes good, it's cheap and it's fast!

I can't imagine going here for 'dinner' but if you want to grab something in a hurry or are starving after a night out, then head straight for Charlie's. I like their pork chip suey or the chicken chow mein. Mmm...I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Charlies is fatty, greasy, stodgy night-time food, just made for soaking up the swirling beer in your tummy. I think the people who end up in Charlies have already abused their bodies so much that night that one last hit in the form of a 'three-in-one' is not going to make a difference. You may leave feeling that you have a brick in your stomach but at least the alcohol has some company down there!

The staff will temporarily confiscate your drink should you try to smuggle it in but they just add it to their collection and give it back as you leave which is nice. This is a Chinese that caters almost exclusively for the intoxicated that's all you really need to know.

I really dislike this place. I can see that it has a place in the heart of the hungry late night partygoer, but ugh, you really have to be drunk to enjoy Charlie's. I had a chow mein there last night, and it arrived glistening with what I first assumed was oyster sauce but no, it was grease. The veg and chicken were both utterly tasteless, I may have detected a squeak of flavour in the green pepper but I probably imagined it. Salt is recommended if you want to have any flavour experience at all. I tried my companions' curry sauce and satay and there wasn't a whole lot of difference between them. Just...say no. There are plenty of other Chinese restaurants in Dublin city centre that aren't amazing but still outdo Charlie's. It's very handy if you don't want to deal with the waiting time involved in a 'proper' restaurant though. The best that can be said is that it's cheap, cheerful and quick.
