Film Base is a great learning centre. I have done a course here and I thoroughly recommend the classes. They range from scriptwriting to film-making. The classes are affordable and the teachers have experience of working in the industry.

The building itself is very impressive, there is a gallery downstairs open to the public and a public cafe upstairs.

They also run free lectures, talks and exhibitions from time to time. The staff are helpful and approachable.

Also it's central location in Temple Bar makes it accessible by all public transport routes.

Filmbase, located on the distinctive but unimaginatively named Curved St in Temple Bar is a resource for filmmakers. Most of the other reviews have hit the nail on the head, so I won't rehash what is said there, but here are a couple of addenda:

Filmbase have folders of headshots if you are looking for actors. You don't have to be a member or anything, you can just take whatever folder you want (Males 30-40 yrs old, for example) and head up to the coffee shop to peruse at your leisure. The coffee shop do a nice line in fancy lemonades, too.

And if you are a student and you would like to rent some lenses or whatever off them, it's better if you pretend that you aren't a student, as they will be more amenable to letting you have the gear. However, don't try and bullshit them if you are not confident in being able to pull it off, as they get bullshitters in a lot, so you have to be on top of your game in bullshit terms (DON'T wear a suit in order to impress them. Real-life media guys don't dress like that when renting gear. Real life media guys dress exclusively in North Face clobber; buy yourself some of that, hang around Filmbase, and watch the job offers come rolling in).

As well as being a great resource for aspiring film makers and technicians, Filmbase is centrally located in the arts quarter and sometime playground for English stag nights, of Temple bar.

Took part in one of the classes here and found it very educational and informative. Stephen who ran the class has worked as a screen writer for years.

Film base offer waged and unwaged membership rates and a year long subscription to Film Ireland. As well as access to their range of equipment. They also have a great coffee shop in their curved street HQ.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that you can take great courses at Filmbase? The prices are kind of expensive but if you're serious about making movies, the courses are necessary.

Some of the topics they're teaching are Final Cut Pro (video editing), documentary editing and Photoshop (image editing), basically the essentials of the trade. Pick up one of their brochures for more information.

Nicely situated and open place, I love going there to have a look at exhibitions. I've recently gone to one of their workshops, it was only 15€ for a 2h 1/2 talk/workshop which is mad, really interesting place where you can feel the synergy of passionnate filmakers and other visual artists.

You can be fairly confident in saying that without filmbase there wouldn't be much of an Irish film industry. It is through filmbase initiatives that the majority of new Irish talent have cut their teeth, and long may it continue.
