Damn good food and a reasonable price for Temple Bar area.

Went there the night before St. Patrick's Day, and as was the case for everything around there, was packed with a line to be seated.

Even with the massive line, the staff and service was extremely friendly and quick after being seated.  I had to wait slightly longer than I was told to get seated, but it was worth the wait as almost every bit of the 3 course meal I had there was amazing.

One of the best meals I have had while travelling in the UK / Ireland the past couple of months.

We started our pub crawl night early with dinner in the temple bar area.  It is very cozy in here and our waiter was awesome!  He was lighthearted, fun and accommodating on our requests.

For US tourists, restaurants in Dublin have early bird specials since their "early bird hours" are 5-7pm which is standard dinner hours for US peeps.  I had the 3 course early bird special.  I started with the seafood chowder which can be shocking since it's not what you think.  It was ok but very filling.  I had the boxty chicken which was dry but the boxty pancake (fried potato) was delicious.  Then I had the cheesecake which tasted like a slice from a store bought cheesecake.

It does get loud but it was a nice start to the evening regardless.

The short of it - the wife and I had never had Irish food before. Mission accomplished....We ate Irish food.

Not sure I'll revisit Boxty, Beef Stew or the weird bread they served in the near future, but I'm glad we checked the mandatory Irish meal while in Ireland off the list at Gallagher's. Authentic experience (I think - what do I know?) and great service.

Definitely liked Boxty House - pretty different than what you'd get at an Irish pub.  The Boxty's are great - there are two different types...the pancakes (almost a giant crepe with stuff in the middle) and the dumplings.  My wife and I each got one, which was great!  Personally, I liked the pancake better but that might have been because the dumplings were in a cream sauce.

Visited Ireland on my Honeymoon a couple of years ago, and we had not heard anything about Gallagher's Boxty House, we just wandered by and the place looked so inviting, so we just went in.

And boy were we glad we did so.  4 Years later I still remember I had the Murpheys Beef Stew and my wife had the Corned Beef and Cabbage Boxty.  I mean when I still think about how great a meal was 4 years later I would say it made an impact.

I love that they may seat you at a table for 4 and you might have to share with another couple.  We met some nice people and had a great conversation when we ate at Gallagher's.  The staff was very friendly and answered all our questions about the food.  They were really top notch!

It was so good we ended up eating there a second time, and we were only in Dublin for 3 days.

I cannot wait to go back again!

Really overpriced "authentic" Irish food in the heart of Temple Bar.  The service should get 5 stars as both times we went we received extremely attentive service.  I don't remember the name of the 1st waiter but the second go around it was Martin.  I had the traditional stew sampler (the Coddle was my fave), and the 2nd time I had the corned beef hash and a dozen oysters.  The food was good, not great, but it's a cute place with great service and fun place to eat.

Because it is located in Temple Bar, it is often filled to the brim with tourists and can make it difficult to get in for a meal.  They also don't take reservations, so even more difficult!  However, I went for lunch and was seated right away!  I was really hungry... lots of travelling, no breakfast, so I opted for the 3 Course Lunch for €25.50 because just about everything on the menu is an option!

I started with the Leek and Potato soup... very nice and the soda bread was very good.  I then had the Corned Beef and Cabbage Boxty.  This is a big portion of food, so bring your appetite!  It was absolutely fantastic!  It was everything I expected and more!  The corned beef was tender, and big chunks all throughout the boxty!  The cabbage was lovely and the parsley sauce was so creamy and rich.  The boxty itself was fluffy, light, and went well with the beef and the rich sauce.  There was a pile of salad on the side, no dressing, in my opinion it was kind of a waste.

While my waiter was very friendly, he was so busy that at one point, I thought he had forgotten I was even there.  I considered skipping dessert because it was taking so long to get served, but I couldn't pass up Bread and Butter Pudding.  The dessert was really good, but the custard was very runny and they serve it on a plate that doesn't have much of a lip, so pouring it all over was not really an option, so I dipped pieces into the custard.

The amount of food is amazing and the quality is wonderful, but the service is a bit inefficient.  Go for lunch, otherwise you'll have trouble getting in at dinner time, and make sure that you aren't in a rush... in fact this might be a good place to sit and just linger over your lunch.

A hidden gem in Dublin.  Loved the food.  The burger my girlfriend had was obviously fresh ground and topped with the most amazing Irish Porter Cheddar!  We were late getting there and were lucky to get in.  It fills up early due to being in the heart of the Temple Bar area.

Some of the best boxty this New Yorker has ever eaten.

For those of you who aren't familiar with boxty it's a potato pancake of sorts similiar to a crepe and you can serve it filled with various things like meat.

I had the lamb boxty and I loved it.

I remember being there and when the waiter told us they served Murphy's not Guinness having a collective sigh. I would have loved it if they served only Beamish, but Murphy's is nasty when compared to the heavenly delicous nectar that is a proper Irish pint of Guinness (in Dublin too no less).

Ate here with the family, including two picky aunts whom seem to only like traditional somewhat bland meals, and everyone found something delicious to eat.

Loved it! I went in because it was one of the few places that met my 2 qualifications: vegetarian options & no one standing outside trying to persuade us to enter.  In spite of there being no one outside yelling on the crowded streets, the reataurant was full.  I assumed that was because it was surviving on a decent reputation and happily waited to be seated (only 10-15 minutes).

The inside is cozy and cute, and our server was pretty nice.  They had several vegetarian options I was really interested in, including a pair salad and boxty dumplings, but on our waiter's recommendation I got the boxty pancake filled with veggie chilli and topped with sour cream.  It was very good & very hearty!  They use Quorn meat in it.  My husband, who had really been wanting to try some Irish stew, got the sampler trio for himself.  He really enjoyed them all.  One was "just like my mom's."

I actually wanted to got back the next day, but we decided to spread it around.  If we return I'll go back, and in the meantime, I will certainly recommend it to friends.

You know, this is a solid lunch / dinner option in Temple Bar if you walk into it realizing that, since it's in Temple Bar, it's gonna be filled with tourists and the food probably isn't going to be the most mind blowing thing in the world.

First visited in 2005 on a jaunt through Ireland and thoroughly enjoyed our two dinners here.  We remembered solid food, nice flavors, and yummy desserts.

Fast forward five years and sure enough, same thing.  We ventured out of the norms of Ireland's pub food and tried various Boxties.  Everything we tried was satisfying, with nice flavors and tasted great with a Murphy's Irish Stout.

If we're ever in the area again, I'm sure we'll hit up Gallagher's.

I've back here twice for breakfast, and I'm revising my opinion UPWARD.  Dublin doesn't really DO breakfast (other than that thing with the rashers and the sausage and the egg and the tomato and the black pudding and a bit of farl if yer lucky), but occasionally I find a spot which realizes that the first meal of the day 1) could start before 11am and 2)might consist of something other than pork products.

I'm a fan of their version of eggs benedict, or as they call it "Smoked Salmon and Poached Egg", served on toasted boxty loaf.  It makes a welcome change of pace from the ubiquitous Full Irish.

I love this place.  I know this is a tourist trap yada yada, but when you are in town and craving an awesome fry this is the place for me.

I came here mostly because of my new discovery of the 'Boxty'.  I was visiting the in-laws and for one of the frys my sister-in-law busted out the boxty. I have never such yummy pancake in my life!  How is that I have married an Irish man for 10 years and he never introduce me to this delicious Irish food item is beyond me.

I digress! Try the fry and get the boxy (pancake style) and your mouth would be in heaven.

Um... okay I was an American visitor so this review may not apply to the general population but here goes...

GROSSSSS. Gross, gross, gross. My travel buddy and I wanted to try some traditional Irish cuisine and since this restaurant had the word "traditional" in it, in we went.

I had absolutely no idea what all the listed dishes were, so we both ordered their specialty/regular dish, the lamb stew and boxty (didn't know what that is either).

This has got to be one of the worst stew I've ever tasted. To the point where I canNOT swallow it. I pushed the plate away and was just done. Maybe my American tongue just wasn't used to the taste, but it's something that I will not try again. The boxty...this pancake looking thing was bland and just very confusing to eat. I was one very confused gal in this restaurant.

Maybe I should've kissed an Irish first.

It's the perennial problem.  You have visitors arriving from afar and you need to show them what Dublin is all about!  So where do you bring them? Obviously some of the capital's finer hostelries such as the Stag's Head and The Long Hall get a look in. But if your guests are from Finland you know that they are going to be thirsty. If they have just run in the Dublin City Marathon then the potential for pint swilling starts to tip into the realms of the downright scary.

They said that they wanted to experience Dublin life to its fullest. I assumed that didn't mean spending the night in the Bridewell fending off the drunken advances of some of Dublin's more 'colourful' characters!

Soakage. That was my only hope of salvation. Soakage. With that in mind I booked Gallaghers for 7pm that evening. I asked if there was any chance that we could get a window seat. 'Highly unlikely' he said but he would make a note of my request on the booking sheet. He said they had a deal where you could have 3 courses for €25 plus an Irish Coffee for an extra €5. Sounded very reasonable to me.

Although the place was packed when we arrived we were sitting at our window table within 5 minutes. The waiter was terrific and suggested we try some of the Porterhouse beers that they stock. Of course my Finnish friends dived at this opportunity and were quickly on their way to Valhalla (or whatever they call it in Finland).

    Then the soakage arrived :o)

Starters: A mixture of Spiced Beef and Smoked Fish
    Mains: Stew for everyone
    Dessert: Stuffed so none ordered

When the waiter asked if we would like deserts we declined but instead ordered 4 Irish Coffees. He then said 'Seeing as you are not having desserts I will only charge you for 2 Irish Coffees'!  Top man and an excellent experience.

The food was really terrific.  Certainly not garnished with finesse, but if good comfort food at a great price is what you want, they provide it in bucket loads. I would highly recommend it!

And the Finns? Gallaghers food set them up so well for the night that the Bridewell never even got a look in!

Note: all my recent vacation in Ireland Yelp reviews will have the same 1st paragraph preamble, for just the review itself skip to the 2nd paragraph.

On a whirlwind 2 week vacation to Ireland, the girlfriend & I tried to see & experience absolutely as much of this incredible land as we could. We did not accomplish every last activity we wished we could have on our rather ambitious itinerary. Nonetheless, we did discover a land of numerous stunning & magical wonders. We did see a land of unending natural beauty. We did learn of a land with a monumentally long history of trials, tragedies & triumphs. We did get to meet many kind, humorous, warm & generous people. Our vacation to Ireland was just 2 weeks, but that was time enough to know this is a land easy to love & a land to be sorely missed.

Feeling the jetlag of departing California in the morning & arriving in Ireland the next morning, the girlfriend & I were more hungry than sleepy just after landing & checking into our hotel. It was time to kill 2 birds with 1 stone: check out Temple Bar & get something to eat. Before our trip, a friend had mentioned boxty & recommended we try it in Ireland. Per wikipedia: "boxty (bacstaí or arán bocht tí in Irish meaning "poor house bread") is a traditional Irish potato pancake." Lo & behold, we strolled over to Temple Bar & immediately came across Gallagher's Boxty House.

Like a lot of Temple Bar, this place has a charming & cozy feel. Service was friendly, conversational, & very welcoming to us obviously American tourists. Looking over our menus, we were eager to order our 1st pints of heavenly brew in Ireland. We had heard the legend that Guinness is better in Ireland than anywhere else & were looking forward to trying it out. What's this? No Guinness on tap? It's true. Testing the legend would have to wait. We both ordered pints of Murphy's stout, which tasted pretty much like the last Murphy's stout I had in the States.

For food, the girlfriend ordered the Gaelic Boxty (potato pancake with fillet steak medallions in a mushroom, whiskey & black peppercorn sauce) & I ordered the Corned Beef & Cabbage Boxty (potato pancake with Irish corned beef and sautéed cabbage in a rich parsley sauce). Our orders didn't take long. Though described as a potato pancake, the boxty seemed more like a potato crepe to me. After taking a few bites of my own, I tried some of the girlfriend's boxty too. Both were positively delicious. The mushroom, whiskey & black peppercorn sauce perfectly complemented the steak & the rich parsley sauce was indeed creamy, rich & flavorful.

Being in Temple Bar, food at Gallagher's Boxty House can be pricey. There are specials, but if you're looking for a boxty dish plan on spending around €20. Even so, for delicious food & tasty boxty with friendly service in Temple Bar, Gallagher's Boxty House is a good way to go.

Quite possibly the worst meal I have ever paid for.  I was suckered into going here because of a relative that was "dying to try a boxty in Dublin."

What is this place?  A damnable tourist trap.  Horrid.  It tastes like Dinty Moore (aka canned stew that tastes like the ass end of a rhino).  On top of that, it is very expensive.  The owners must sleep on piles of money, because their profit margin must be through the roof.

All I can say is there are many, MANY, better places to eat in this part of Dublin.

Went here for dinner on our first night in Ireland and absolutely loved it!  We didn't make a reservation so we put our name in and had a drink at the pub across the street while we waited.  And worth the wait it was!!

We sat in the downstairs area, which although there were no windows, felt very cozy and warm.  The atmosphere was fabulous and inviting and we ended up befriending the couple next to us.

The service was impeccable and the food was amazing.  We split the special appetizer (which was amazing and a nice sample of Irish classics) and the pear blue cheese salad.  Both were delicious and a nice mix of salty and sweet.  For dinner we split the Bangers and Mashed which was the best part of the meal for me, as I had been in search of a good Banger since I arrived in Europe earlier that week.  For drinks, we went with one of the wine suggestions and ordered the bottle, which was also amazing.

    I love this place!

I really like this restaurant and the fun Irish feel to it and the tourists enthusiasm for the food and Guinness and the trad Irish music playing. Yes it is a tourist restaurant and based in Temple Bar but there is not a plastic paddy or leprechaun in sight. Promise!

The menu is full or traditional Irish fare and Boxty Pancakes, which are pancakes made of potato. My friend had the salmon to start and she said it was lovely but not as nice as the one she had in the Shebeen Chic the night before, and I had the Leek and Potato soup which was nice and tasty and served with lots of home made soda bread.

For mains my friend had the traditional Beef & Murphy's Irish Stout stew, which she said was full of flavour, meat really tender and over all really warming and filling. I had the vegetable Boxty pancake which was like a mild veg curry in the pancake. I found this to be really really tasty and very very filling. We ordered a side of herbie dumplings that came in gravy which melted in the mouth and exploded with taste.

Add on top of this one coke and the 12.5% service charge that they add on to every bill and it came to a shocking 52euro! Rip off! The food was lovely, service great and staff really helpful and knew the menu off by heart but it was so expensive! I would go back here but only if I wasn't paying!

I'm not sure if I liked this restaurant because it had genuinely good food or because everywhere else we went was bad.

It was our last night in Ireland and we decided to eat here because it said "traditional Irish restaurant" and all other restaurants were Asian or bars. So, I said, sure, why not, I've always been easily susceptible to advertisement.

We ordered the smoked salmon boxty in a butter sauce. That was delicious. It was very hearty and just melted in your mouth. I ordered the bacon, cabbage and champ. It was a pretty large ham hock but it was definitely tender and delicious. The waiter (he's British) asked if I was sure, since it's a very big piece. Guess he didn't think I could finish a ham hock. Well, I sure surprised him. The food was definitely very good there. Better than other places, which I can't remember the names of. But as we all know, Ireland's not known for its food.

One thing to note is that they don't serve Guinness. They serve Murphy's, which is like Guinness. I know - no Guinness in an eatery in Dublin!? Unbelievable!

I'm not going to show how savvy I am by admitting that I love Gallagher's Boxty House.  It's contrived and geared toward tourists to provide a facade of Irish authenticity.  It's also the home of the best meal we had while visiting Dublin.   It's situated in the heart of the hackneyed Temple Bar area but they have some truly delicious food, served in a quiet and intimate atmosphere.  We were really pleased that they featured a 3-course meal for 25 euro.  It was truly a value.  Strong recommendations for the spiced beef, Gaelic boxty and the bread budding ( a massive portion).   Remarkable, enjoyable coupled with attentive service.  It may be theatrical, but it was exceptional.

One of those places you think twice about going into because of its high tourist zone location, but well worth the visit if you can handle the crowds.

This restaurant seems quite small, but rest assured - there is a downstairs section so even if it looks full the staff will probably be able to accommodate you in a wee corner somewhere.

The boxty is the glorified dish here - for those not in the know a boxty is a pancake type dish, served with meat and veges inside and bathed in sauces. Very filling and very good. My friends had the seafood and vegetarian options and both raved about their meals.

Of course I had to go and order something non-boxty in a boxty restaurant... I opted for the baked salmon with roast vegetables - in a word - divine! If you are away from home or simply want to have a Sunday roast-type mum-cooked feel to your meal, then this is the one to go for.

The prices are Temple Bar infused, so the value for money thing goes out the window a little but, but at around 15 euro for a main we considered our meals pretty decent. Certainly filling!

This would be a good place to take a visitor from overseas.

So, this place doesn't have that many hot reviews. I have no clue why. Maybe it's because of the exchange rate. Or maybe people don't like potatoes (not me, I adore them). We went on a Sunday night around 8 and the place was packed, but we were seated within 5 minutes. It's communal seating only, and we sat down beside two other tourist couples.

I got a two course menu,  which consisted of  the tomato basil bisque and traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage. Now, this is the stuff to write home about. It was delicious, probably my favorite meal in all of Ireland. They serve their corned beef with a cream based parsley sauce, and of course my beloved potatoes. All this for only 15p!  That's what I call value.

My boyfriend was extremely jealous of my to-die-for corned beef, and we both kept taking bites of it way after we were full, and didn't stop until we had almost licked the plate. Opps, American faux pas.

Cozy, stuffed and a few Magners later, we were some happy campers. Or hotelers.

Yes, it's touristy. But the food's so good, who cares? I had a wonderful salad with Irish Cashel Blue cheese, a flavorful lmab stew, while my partner had the lamb boxty. Everything tasted fresh, and seemed to use Irish local ingredients. The best meal I had in the Temple Bar area, and can't wait to try it again.

My first time here was actually ok - touristy, yeah, but the food was enjoyable in a guilty-pleasure kind of way. In the past couple of years though, I've had to go back at least two too many times. It's been in travel shows and in the tour guides, etc, and there doesn't seem to be that much choice in the heart of temple bar, so visitors often choose it. We've had guests get sick - food poisoning - from eating here and another time a guest found hair in her soup, and the waiter made us feel like we were making an unreasonable request to return it to the kitchen!

Great place for some traditional Irish food when you're in the heart of Dublin. The Beef Stew was fantastic and the mushroom soup starter was some of the best soup I've ever had. They offer a three course mean for €25, you get a starter, an entree and a dessert. Their selection of desserts is impressive and the bread pudding was delicious.

Tourist trap or not, this place was the only restaurant I ate at repeatedly in Dublin because I had such a great experience every time. Located in the mecca of the tourist district, a bit of touristy kitsch is expected. But really its quaint inside with a very friendly staff. And the food... to this date, I don't think I have had a better breakfast. I had the smoked salmon on boxty loaf with sauteed spinach, poached eggs and cream sauce. Every. Time. The service here wasn't overbearing but my coffee was always full and I didn't wait an extraordinary amount of time for anything. My husband had the full irish and it was a mountain of food for a reasonable price.

We were visiting Dublin for the weekend on a 2-week hop around Europe. Figured we'd have to try Irish Boxty while in Dublin. Had read that Gallagher's was the place to get it and boy were they right! I tried the chicken and leek with bacon cream sauce.....WOW! absolutely divine! And the Guiness bread they serve up was so tasty - it was like a sweet brownie...I couldn't get enough! Husband had the stew which was also great. The service was super friendly too.
We wanted to try a few different places while in Dublin but that next night there was no denying it. I had boxty on the brain! We walked all through Temple Bar and read almost all the menus we could, but in the end we ended up back at Gallagher's! I kept saying that boxty was my favorite dish so far on our trip and how on earth could I leave Dublin without trying one of the other flavors they served!? So this time I ordered the corned beef and cabbage boxty....WOW WOW!
It isn't cheap there, but it's so worth the splurge because the cozy atmosphere is perfect, you can watch the chaotic crowds of Temple Bar passing by outside, all while enjoying the best meal in Dublin!

You don't even need to look in the window, the name alone should spell it out - this place is a tourist trap.

As tourist traps go, though, Gallagher's Boxty House is pretty good. Their main menu prices are fairly steep (anywhere from €15-20), but they do offer a limited lunch menu Monday-Friday between 12 and 4 for €5. It doesn't include the famed boxties, which I've never tried, but it does have some other ould Irish things like Cottage Pie (close enough) and Guinness sausages with champ.

As it was the lunchtime menu, we were a little worried that the portions would be similarly thrifty, but if anything they were a little big for lunchtime. The champ was beautiful - basic mash with scallions/green onions and lumpy bits, and the sausages were OK - a bit tough for my tastes, but I am very particular about my sausages, and if they're not fried they just don't taste right. The cottage pie was nice too - plenty big again, with peas and carrots mixed in for flavour, which is where a lot of cooks fall down.

The service was fast and the waiter, who was wearing a butcher's apron for some reason, was nice, but we were a bit irked by the 12.5% mandatory service charge. It would be understandable if it was just for the cheapo lunches, but it's a day-round thing, which is a little bit of a liberty in my book. The service is hands-off, which is brilliant, but I shouldn't have to pay an extra 1/8 of my bill just to be left alone.

That said, scoot by the Boxty House on a weekday afternoon and you'll get as good a meal as you'll find anywhere in town, and for the same price as McDonalds to boot.

I loved this little restaurant in Temple Bar. It had a traditional setting, with nice wooden tables and chairs, and a live musician performing most of the time. The tables were a little small for all the bags and jackets that I had, but otherwise the place was comfy. This was the first restaurant I visited in Dublin, and I had a good impression of it.

I had the seafood chowder and the Irish beef stew. The seafood chowder was awesome: lots of seafood, great taste, and good portion. The beef stew was also good, though both the color and the taste could use a little more oomph. It was still quite good though, and I enjoyed it very much.

Expensive(for American standards), but hearty meals none the less.  I love the boxtys.  They were amazing!

Wandered in off the street on a whim and were really impressed by the boxty. We had the vegetarian chili and the seafood both of which were great. Definitely don't miss the boxty desert (warm banana with butterscotch); it was delicious. Definitely check this out if you are looking for an easy place to drop in to.
