It's always fun going out for dinner with work, especially when they're paying.
I had been here 11 years ago and remember an excellent dining experience. Then last night I was pleasantly surprised when the food and the dining experience itself was so satisfying.
We had the mid week special; 3 courses with wine for 2 for €60. I had the meat starter and then the lamb dish.
The waiter was very attentive and showed us how to eat our food with our hands. Only one of my colleagues decided to join me and go Nepalese, while the others looked on in mild disgust/amusement.
Without going into great detail, great food (not mad about the desert though), great service and great atmosphere. I'd love to try the one in Rathgar, which is actually closer to home. I think I would really enjoy the cushions/low sofa style rather than sitting at the table. I'm so unsophisticated....

Yay, I'm a fan, but not of our waiter, who was probably the rudest person we encountered in Dublin by far. His attitude was horrendous, not inviting at all, telling us we had to hurry for the next reservation at 7:45, which was understandable, but then he just disappeared and took forever to serve us. It was like pulling teeth to get him to come over and refill our water. Then he just left us hanging and never brought over the check. It was only when we stood up and put on our coats that he came by. Not to mention there was no smile all night from him - not even a tiny one on that pudgy scowling face. Worst waiter ever. Then, at the end, he handed me his scanner thing to fill out the charge and print out the receipt for him - like he was too busy to take the time out to do it himself, like we weren't important enough to even be bothered with. Terrible service. Ugh.

As for the food though, it was delicious. Four stars. Ambience was lovely, as well. Low lighting, colorful decorations. Garlic Nan, Chicken curry (there's a nepalese name for this, quite tasty). I got the Vegetable Special, and although it was good, I don't think I would order it again. The sweet lassi I WOULD order again though.

Maybe the waiters (or waiter, it really was just that one) would treat you better if you had a reservation? Or maybe your experience would be drastically different if you didn't have scowl-face serving you? I wish I knew what we did to him. Or I hope he finds happiness in his life, somehow, somewhere.

Price-wise the restaurant is... well, it's pretty pricey. You're probably going to pay 14-25 euros for one main dish.

    So, to recap.
    Food = delicious
Service = Meh. I've experienced MUCH better.

After trying the Taj Mahal, which was closed, we called in here. I hadn't been before, It was a Tuesday and surprisingly upstairs was full so we were seated in the basement area. Nice restaurant inside. Good menu, not too big.
The service was very good, and the owner called over to make sure we were okay.

Food was tasty, but not mind blowing! No set menu which was disappointing on a Tuesday.

The sharing platter for starters is worth a try.
I had a lamb shish, which was good, and it was accompanied by a choice of sauces.

All in all an enjoyable experience.

Monty's is great because of the fact that it is a Nepalese restaurant, which is quite uncommon round these parts. It's also great because the food is friggin good.

That being said, deliciousness has its price and Monty's, being so delicious, is pricey. Dinner ranges from 17-26 euros per entrée so it might be just a special treat now and again. It's worth it though, because when have you ever had Nepalese food before? They even have one dish called Momo that has be ordered 24 hours in advance! I haven't had the traditionally Tibetan chicken or vegetable dumplings, but I think it would be worth it to go just to have something that has to cook for so long. Something to write home about, perhaps.

What exactly is Nepalese food...?  I wasn't 100% sure when we went to Monty's and to be honest, I still don't know!

I had Masu Ra Sag because I love spinach and it was very nice.  Lots of the other dishes look like Indian meals, there's masala and bhutan although admittedly they're the Nepalese version.   Great rice and lovely naan (I love naan) and all of the food is super fresh.  It was pretty empty when we were here, just a couple of other tables full, so we got lots of attention from the waiters and had a really nice meal.  Stayed on for chats until closing.

I was always sceptical of Monty's, the main reason being that it's in Temple Bar, which is typically home to average, pricey establishments overrun with American tourists.

Yet I was very pleasantly surprised when I finally ventured in here for dinner. I ordered the Chicken Gorkhali, a fiery, yogurt-based dish cooked with ginger, chilli and coriander, some of my all-time favourite ingredients. The curry was accompanied with a really good naan, perfect for scooping up the sauce.

The prices certainly don't reflect their Nepalese origins, but are definitely indicative of the good quality of the food and service.
