Maybe it was the wine, or the underlit dining room, but I had a serious experience at Odessa.
We were part of a large party with an adventurous birthday girl in the lead -she loves trying new places, and while Odessa isn't new to Dubliners in the know, practically everyone at the table was delighted with this discovery.
Smooth-as-silk service and an unbelievable series of tastes left me staring in wonder at that open kitchen churning constantly at the back of the main dining room. The wine (an Australian Shiraz) was less than thrilling, and certainly not cheap at my per-glass sipping rate, but all my worries melted with that starter: Vietnamese Chicken Salad.
Holy Flavour Shock!
Those cashews! That dressing! The chicken itself was, underneath it all, very average but I let it all go and took in those spicy, sweet and sour flavours. My main was a quesadilla... normally something I'd avoid, but I wasn't in the mood for the overly rich chicken confit or a heavy steak.
Once that plate hit the table, I was completely won over: crisp flat breads mired in gooey cheese and well-seasoned grilled chicken, stacked high and accompanied by rich dollops of sour cream, zingy tomato salsa and a cliantro-esque guacamole.
That must be where those two glasses of wine kicked in, and I started to chant and chatter about my dinner in that hyperventilating sort of way that makes people move their chairs an inch away.
And then... dessert.
Actually I'd wanted to skip but a friend at the table insisted I help with the meltingly gorgeous hot fudge sundae she was "struggling" through. I am nothing if not a natural assistant. A few spoonfuls of that and I was done for the night.
Magic.
Not many people know Odessa, but those that do know it as a good, under-the-radar restaurant just off Dame St. Less people know about the ultra low-key members' club they've got upstairs.
I've had two occasions to hit up Odessa. The first was to conduct an interview with a certain member of the Irish hip hop fraternity for a certain magazine. Though it was an absolute shocker of a day - and I was soaked to my skin - the interior of the club took me away from all that. It's a cosy little spot - lightly decorated and unpretentious, with some leather sofas their only extravagance. Dame St. at rush hour can get awful noisy, but none of that penetrated to the room, much to the relief of my bog-standard voice recorder.
The second occasion was to attend an intimate gig of another Irish musician. Again, the low-key setting was perfect for the event - the band was electric, but the room was set up so that acoustic and full band performances work equally as well. There were just a few tables dotted around, with minimalist cushioned stools instead of chairs and one big sofa set up in front of the stage. I knew nobody there, but I instantly felt like everybody else was friends, even though they weren't.
Even better, it was the few music venues in town at the time where you could get a proper pint for under a fiver - plenty of bars have no intention of ever hitting that figure again, so for a "members' club" to do same was quite the feature.
The Odessa Club comes well-recommended.
"That really hit the spot." That's what my dad told anyone who would listen when we went to Odessa for breakfast yesterday. We had a lovely brunch on the comfortable chairs downstairs in this cosy restaurant. Odessa has the members club feel that makes you feel as if you're sitting in your own sitting room at home.
We had four full breakfasts and they were all devoured. Good food (usual fry fodder but with the added bonus of home fries and a croissant on top) which was very tasty and just right for the morning after the night before. I've been here in the evenings too and it's great food any time of the day. Reasonably priced too. We all left happy and full - "that really hit the spot."
I've been going to the Odessa for years and I'm a big fan. It's particularly lovely for brunch - the French toast is fab, as are the Eggs Benedict and the omelette. All washed down with a Bellini or a Bloody Mary of course. I've had dinner there as well and it's been consistently good. The Odessa is doing this really clever menu nowadays called 'Fivers', which is small plates of a variety of dishes to share or combine for €5 each. Talk about cheap! Fivers runs Tuesday to Friday from 6pm and Sunday from 5.30pm and the range includes salt and pepper calamari (I've had this and it's yummy), chorizo, red wine and chickpea stew, mushrooms with garlic and thyme on toast, cicken leg confit and more. Everything is delicious and such good value for money that you couldn't go wrong. It's great to have such an inexpensive menu in such a fantastic restaurant.
A nice spot for dinner and brunch. The food here is top notch, and the prices are pretty high too but it's definitely worth in for a treat. The restaurant proper is upstairs but in the basement they have a more casual area for drinks, and this is a great place to have brunch here. The whole atmosphere is chilled but the food is excellent... their French toasts are genius!
Odessa is one of my favourite spots in Dublin.
It's an almost 'blink and you'll miss it' kind of place and I had walked by it numerous times before I found it the first time I cam here, long ago. But onece you go, I guarantee you'll never forget it again!
It's a really retro, relaxed place and you are guaranteed to spot one or two 'celebs' rockin in and out of here.
It does the most amazing brunch at the weekend, from 1130-4. It always annoys me when places only serve breakfast till11am at the weekend. Eh, what about the people with hangovers??? Well maybe it's only me who rolls out of bed at 11am on a Sunday morning! I doubt it though...
I either go for the full breakfast (which comes with a croissant, major kudos) or the smoked salmon poached eggs, which I ask to be scrambled. But there's loads of variety on the brunch money - like quesadillas, AMAZING French toast and so on and so forth.
Can you tell I really like this place???
Ps, definitely indulge in a mimosa too!
