This is THE spot in the old city. Lots of people, cafes, and amazing architecture. I was there from early evening to night and loved the transition in lighting. You could hear an audible gasp from the people when they turned the lights on (around 10pm due to late 9:30 sunset).
Definitely a must see. Take the time and have a sit for a coffee, drink, or dessert if not a meal. It is worth it to people watch.
I saw one storks nest, no stork, on the south side.
The sun closes down some of the eastern cafes due to the heat but most reopen after it sets a bit.
There is a tourist center on the west side.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Axon J.Frisco, United States11419 Apr 2023
If you're looking for a great spot to enjoy a drink and soak up the atmosphere of Madrid, look no further than Plaza Mayor.
The people also make it fun. Whether you're a local or a visitor, you'll find that this spot attracts a friendly and diverse crowd of all ages and backgrounds. It's the perfect place to strike up a conversation, make new friends, or just people-watch and soak up the energy of the city.
Overall, I can't recommend the Plaza Mayor enough. Whether you're looking for a quick drink after work, a relaxed spot to catch up with friends, or a lively atmosphere for a night out, this is the perfect spot to do it. So grab a cold beer, sit back, and enjoy the magic of Madrid!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - John G.Aranjuez, Spain89696811 Aug 2022

Architecturally speaking this place is marvelous. Its a cool place to walk around, visit some cool shops and restaurants, and if you are there at the right time to see some great performances. I was fortunate to see both musical acts in addition to acrobatic performances. Its gorgeous at night but I prefer to bask in the glory for the sunlight. There is an atmosphere here that you cannot find anywhere else.

Beautiful plaza. Lots of options for restaurants, ice cream, pastries, etc. You can quickly arrive at all other touristic destinations from here (10 minutes by foot maximum). You can rent a hotel room in the Plaza itself which adds a fun component to any trip! There are often events in the Plaza - if you're here on a Saturday, don't be surprised if some kind of concert is occurring!

I love this place. On my third trip to Spain over the past few years I'm always counting the days til I reach Salamanca & walk into the Plaza Mayor.
I love the feel. People promenading.
Children playing. Teenagers kicking a ball. Priests striding across the stone path. Older people dancing to traditional music.
Day or night, it's a great spot for people watching & catching life on camera.
See you there!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 4041248375617 Sept 2017
What a beautiful gathering space and heart of a city! There was so much activity and life here, that it would be easy to sit in this plaza all day people watching, if that were your thing. There are tons of restaurants and gelato spots dotting the perimeter and during the day, we saw a wedding party emerging from the central building/ centerpiece. There was also an IKEA photo booth set up in the middle with a long queue of people taking pix in a living room set up, which was kinda quirky. We especially loved being here in the evening, and the audible gasp of delight when the lights came on as darkness fell, the moon overlooking it all. It was truly picturesque and a one of the reasons we hope to return to Salamanca.

Best Plaza Mayor I've been to so far in Spain.
Great place to enjoy your day... have a beer, socialize, eat some good food, or just simply relax!
In the heart of Salamanca.
Plenty of restaurants to choose from...
The lighting at night looks amazing!

Prolly one of the most beautiful and historic plazas in the world. Its small but georgous and there are malavaristas y estatuas on the weekends. It is lined with good restuarants, hotels, apartments, stores and a Horchata shop you just have to go to. The carved faces of the important historical figures of spain line the inside of the walls above the pillars (excpt Franco of course). This is an accessible and beautiful place that can only be described as the true heart of the city.
