7 reviews for Shanahans on the Green
Shanahan's on the Green is one of the absolute best steak-houses I have ever had the privilege of eating at. The atmosphere, wait staff, food, and drink were all five-star in my book.
The restaurant itself sits across the street of St. Stephen's Green, which is a beautiful garden.
If you are from the Bay Area in California, you will be happy to see Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon on their wine list.
this is the best restaurant in the world. No pretentious Irish nonsense just top class service all the way. I would happily fill my bath with their Caeser Salad and just dive into it letting the juices from the amazing cheese and sauces just seep into my body!!!LOL
Expensive but excellent.
Shanahan Restaurant oozes opulence even before you step into the place. Housed in a 250 year old townhouse overlooking St. Stephen's Green, one can tell that this place is reserved for that special occasion, that place where you want her to say "yes", or that expense account dinner where you want to blow off some steam and some Euros.
The first thing when you approach the building is the huge floral arrangement in the window. Continue upstairs, and that's where the main dining room is.
Shanahan is an American steakhouse, complimented with local Irish ingredients. All beef is hand selected angus, with a combo of dry and wet aging. Each steak is from the best six bone rib section of the steer. What I find interesting is they can trace each cut back to the particular animal and herd's family tree. Now that's quality control. Although my steak was cooked a bit much for rare, the quality of the beef still showed thru.
If you want to throw back a few pints, the "Oval Office" is the name of the bar. As the name suggests, it is decorated with US presidential artifacts...remember, this is an American place.
Bring that diamond ring or bring that contract that needs to be signed. But most important, bring that credit card...it will get a workout.
I've been to a lot of steak restaurants in my time and I think this is the best one I've been to. The service was impeccable and the steak (and lamb) were delicious. The prices make this a special occasion type of place but it is worth it.
The wine selection is top notch, we ended up having an Argentinian Malbec, which turned out to be a good choice based on the meals we decided to order. Highly recommend it if you're having steak.
The dessert menu was very impressive also and we all enjoyed the ice cream and chocolate (I know it sounds boring but trust me, they do something special here).
You'll come out spending at least €60-70 a person if you order wine and have dessert so be warned. Personally I'd be willing to starve myself for a week if it meant I could eat here frequently.
In a word, this place is "perfect".
Simply the best restaurant service I have ever had. At this level you expect the food to be great and it was. What differentiates between great food is the dining experience and these guys knocked it out of the park.
Upon entering we were warmly greeted and told our table was ready but asked if we would like to have a drink in the bar before dinner. Nice touch. We did. The bar is very cool and they transferred the tab to the dinner bill as well as bringing a tray to carry my wife's unfinished drink to our table.
That set the stage for the level of service they provided for the rest of the evening. It was a delightful 2.5 hour experience that while the most expensive dinner (to be fair it included pre-dinner drinks, bottle of wine, extra wine, and dessert) I have ever had ranks among the top three dinning experiences of my life.
The place is small so make a reservation. We arrived at 1900 and for a while there was only one other table occupied but by the time we left it was much busier with only 2 tables open.
Shanahan's is known to be the best steak place in Dublin so this is where I took my bf for his birthday.
Of course we ordered the steak (who doesn't like some Irish beef???) and our sides were creamed spinach with bacon and mashed potatoes. We paired it with an amazing Bordeaux and our meal was complete. The steak was a large portion and next time I will have to order the petite steak. The various starter breads were DELISH!!! The seafood looked fresh and delectable. We didn't try any desserts because we were too full, which means there is a need for another visit soon!
After our meal, we walked downstairs to the "Oval Office" bar to check out the infamous Ronald Reagan rocking chair that is displayed behind the bar. The bartender will tell you the full story of the former President's rocking chair from Air Force One. Photos and short autobiographies hung all around of US presidents with Irish decent. Which I discovered to be many!! Service was impeccable from the second you walk in.
The ambiance is very romantic with beautiful chandeliers hanging down with the right amount of lighting to make the night so special. The restaurant is an adaptive reuse of 2 former townhouses that were converted to make up the restaurant. You feel like you are dining in the White Houses' formal dining room and that's what makes it so special.
If your in Dublin, it's a MUST try! Reservations are highly recommended because it's always busy with tourist and locals celebrating special occasions.
