The North Face shop is strangely part of the Great Outdoors empire and not competition as it appears to be. I'm okay with this, it wouldn't be any cheaper even if it were and the Great Outdoors ain't so bad.
To further Ciara K.'s point there're a few more groups that exclusive wear expensive North Face raincoats.
Firstly, filmmakers, I swear if you see yourself being the next Michael Bay go out now, today, and buy a black North Face parka or you'll havve dropped the ball from day one. It's a fireable offence on set and you're likely to be sent home without pay. Well, you're not going to get paid anyway but ...
And tourists, not just couples with matching jackets, which is weird but I get, no, whole groups of tourists wearing matching raincoats, usually luminous red or orange ones as well. Whether they're male, female, European, Asian, American, wet or dry it makes no difference, they're just as likely to go out looking like their nations official hill walking squad.
Just check it out, I've seen old biddies on history tours doing it, lads on drinking holidays doing it, fans over for the game doing it, teenagers on language exchange doing it ... everyone's doing it! ... XD
This shop could be a little more comprehensively stocked, they don't seem to have the full range of North Face clobber and I've found the size range to be limited at times. The staff have obviously been Stateside for sales bootcamp, the result being you'll need bear mace to get them off your back. -

The North Face is a brand of hiking and adventure wear that is ridiculously expensive but apparently ridiculously good quality. They are the brand of choice amongst hiking couples who insist on wearing matching raincoats, hiking boots and waterproof pants, even for just a walk in the countryside.
They make everything you might need for an excursion up the mountains - rain coats to ski jackets, fleeces to t-shirts, hiking boots to walking sandals, knap-sacks to backpacks, and all other items of clothing and accessories in between.
There's a new North Face store dedicated to the brand in Temple Bar, which appears to be affiliated with The Great Outdoors shop near Grafton Street. The shop has been pretty empty the last few times I've walked by, but at prices starting at over €100 for a lightweight rain coat, it's not hard to see why.
Would be a very popular stock shop for anyone planning a hiking trip to South America for example. -

Ok, I have to admit that I love the North Face. I bought one of their backpacks when I went off to Australia and more than once I was the only one whose gear remained dry in their backpacks- Result! Maybe it's because I'm German and we tend to be fairly outdoorsy but I like my raincoat and bags to be 100% waterproof which is not necessarily a bad thing in Dublin.
The store stocks most of the gear you will need for camping, hiking and all kinds of other outdoorsy pursuits. I've even brought friends here who just wanted to buy a good quality bag or backpack. Yes, it's not the cheapest brand and the staff can be a wee bit pushy trying to get you to buy things you don't really need but if you want decent outdoor gear, it's this or the Great Outdoors.
