This hotel is in a stunning location. I have never stayed here just popped in for a bite to eat. It is very expensive even for a bit to eat - did I mention the stunning views. I had a bowl of soup and being the pedantic little soul that I am I asked for a soup spoon to be informed they did not have one.
Now the reason for using a soup spoon for soup: You dip the spoon in, move it away from you and scoop up some soup. The idea being is that the part of the spoon closest to you is not too hot to take the soup - so no burnt lips. Don't you just love a reason for etiquette and good table manners?
My mother had an open prawn sandwich and she pointed out the prawns were cut in half length-ways. Never seen that before - perhaps even the Ritz Carlton has to make cutbacks? Did I mention the view?
We had a glass of wine each as a treat - an expensive treat although it was a lovely wine.
Parking is great and there is plenty of it.
Ok so it is expensive but for that little touch of luxury in wonderful surroundings it cannot be beaten.
I wish I could say I've stayed in this hotel but, alas, I find it hard to imagine having more much than €200 let alone spending more than that on a room. No, I was here for the first stage of the Tour of Ireland a month or two ago when Lance Armstrong, Mark Cavendish and company came to town.
At the Ritz-Carlton you can comfortably spend up to €5000 on a room for a single night. Now, that's what I call lunacy, sheer lunacy. I mean, it is the Presidential Suite but I'm not sure our presidents should be going around like flipped out rock stars blowing 6 months rent on a single nights bed rest.
The hotel couldn't be in a more idyllic location and even a walk down the long driveway to the hotel is inspiringly lovely. The views abound through the mature silver birch trees with rolling green hills leading to the the Sugar Loaf beyond.
The hotel itself, purpose built in a strange American colonial/palladian-looking style, is a little on the tacky side. It kinda smells of Barbie mansion and seems very much designed to make the nouveau riche tourist feel like the ruling class for a few days, which is not necessarily a good idea.
