I had been wanting to stop into Tony's for the longest time, sandwiches are one of my favorite foods and I heard they do it right.
On my first visit Tony was at the counter and welcomed me in and helped make some suggestions as I was having a hard time deciding. I ended up ordering two sandwiches, the Italian($11.95) (a regular go to at most sandwich spots) and the Godfather ($13.95) (a monster of a sandwich). I ordered these to-go along with a Meatball sub (11.95).
The sandwiches were delicious and they came with a pickle AND Tony gave us dessert (cheesecake).
You can dine in or do take-out and they get very busy around peak lunch hours. The service is always great though.
I stopped in a couple weeks later with a co-worker for lunch and got the Reuben ($11.95) for dine in and it was delicious, the meat was hot and the cheese was melty. They also gave us banana pudding this time as a dessert.
I can understand why this place has been in business so long and why it's so popular downtown. If you haven't tried it, it is well worth the stop.
They're open M-F from 10:30am-3pm which is why it took me so long to stop by, but it's worth the weekday daytime visit to the city if you don't already work downtown.
They also do catering which seems like a great option for parties or business meetings.Helpful 12Thanks 4Love this 11Oh no 0 - 2 Feb 2024
In town for a music education conference, and met up with a couple of my buddies that were on their way over here. They had gone the day before, really liked it, and invited me along. Now I see why they went back two days in a row.
I ordered the godfather, which is Italian sausage, salami, roasted peppers, pepperoncini, and the usual sandwich stuff. It was fantastic! I see why it is their most popular sandwich. I can usually finish these Italian deli sandwiches, but this one defeated me. In a good way I mean. You could definitely split one with a friend. I ordered the option with chips and a drink, and they include a little bit of dessert at the end. Really great place, gets pretty crazy at lunchtime, but we got there about 1130 so we beat the rush. Give it a try!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 19 Jan 2024
I just popped in from out of town. I won't say why i am here, but this deli hit the spot. Within walking distance of the capital, and a bunch of other downtown places, i can see why this place is obviously wildly successful! The Italian sandwich is about as authentic and delicious as it gets, and they have a bunch of other fun looking sandwiches that i might actually go back and try later on today. Yes. Twice in one day!
The place screams old school deli with a modern fun menu. The workers inside were laid back and helpful, and it was an all around awesome experience. I say try this place if you haven't. It's quality and very clean inside with a nice beverage selection to boot! Thanks again for your friendly attitudes. Hard to find these days.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 014740813 Apr 2024
I got the meatball sub and it was really good I would recommend it, if I came back I would try something else since they had so many options but I would get the meatball sub again eventually. It was really nice and spacious inside with lots of drinks, chips, and other snacks to grab in addition to ordering a sandwich. The service was fast and friendly, they give you a number and on the wall there is a screen that shows your number when the food is ready. I definitely recommend trying this place.

I come to town once or twice a year on business. I make it a point each time to come to Tony's. The food is fantastic every time, and an amazing value for what you get. I highly recommend the Godfather, a mountain of a sandwich that is bursting with flavor.
The service staff are friendly and happy to chat. The dining area is always clean and has plenty of indoor seating if it's a hot Sacramento day.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 12 Oct 20236 check-ins
JUST WOW!!!!!! Working on J street has some huge perks.. being this close to amazing food is one. First time in today. Blown away. Customer service was above and beyond. I got the chicken pesto sandwich on sourdough with chips. So much flavor. Everything tasted great and the cheese pulled apart perfectly. My sandwich came with a huge pickle and an amazing fugdy brownie! Just wow!!!!!
I can't wait to come back and try more sandwiches. They also have a huge drink selection and they have fruit, cheesecake, Mac salad, potato salad.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amy T.Elk Grove, United States1327239 Jan 2024
While reporting for jury duty, I took my lunch and walked about 10 minutes to Tony's Delicatessen & Catering. I ordered the meatball sandwich and banana pudding. The meatball sandwich was the perfect "almost-too-hot-to-handle" temperature and the flavors were bold, yet balanced. You definitely need some napkins for this one along with a good sandwich handling technique so the contents don't fall out!
The space was open and airy, but still had an intimate feel as the cashier, Elias, greeted me with a welcoming smile. After only 4 minutes of waiting, Neil served me my sandwich with friendliness, and periodically checked on me. He bussed patron's tables, too, which surprised me since this was a deli, not a sit down restaurant.
Located next door to Miosa Bride (wedding gown shop), give this place a try!!! If I'm selected for the jury panel, I plan to return, too.
*Addendum: As promised, I returned while reporting for my second day of jury duty and this time had the Chicken Herb and Dumpling soup, and the Sicilian on Dutch crunch. In my opinion, good soup is comprised of tastiness, the right texture, and a hot temperature, and this soup had all of the above. The taste was comforting, the dumplings were soft and pillowy without weighing down the dish, and the temperature was burn-your-tongue hot.
I loved the Sicilian because the fresh mozzarella played so nicely with the Italian meats and the basalmic vinegar, which was not too tart so it didn't overpower everything. Be warned that the Dutch crunch is pretty rough. It cut up the roof of my mouth a bit, but it was worth it since the sandwich contents were so mouth watering.
I want to try everything on their menu!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Carlo E.Concord, United States29473713 Jan 2024
Fantastic sandwich, best I've had in Sacramento. Everyone who works there is super friendly with too. I had the first thing on the menu, "the godfather". The sausage was hella good, the bread delicious and the cheese inside was mouth watering
The price was very good and they have a huge selection of chips and drinks.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Evelyn O.Alhambra, United States12150595 Mar 2024
Bread amazing,
Mozzarella fresh, basil delightful... everything about my caprese sandwich was perfection. It really hit all the spots I wanted. On my way into the place a guy walked past me saying "ready to try the best sandwich in town" ... he did not disappoint me. I'd eat here again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 4 Dec 2023
This little nugget is weathering the times as the homeless seemed to have shewed its neighbors away. This is a no frills but tasty little restaurant. The service is fast and the tuna salad in my sandwich was abundant. Had the choice of sourdough slices or from a loaf. The sandwich used fresh bread and was flavored on the tart side, opposed to sweet and was very tasty. Included a slice of dill pickle and a mini York Patty. If I'm downtown again looking for a casual place to just sit and eat, this establishment is the place.
